Day 435: The Day Before Election Tuesday

For lunch today, WordPress ate my pre-written post on tomorrow’s elections.  So, here’s a list of stuff worth taking a look at before you hit the polls.

Slashdot commentary on HBO’s Hacking Democracy, the airing of which Diebold tried to prevent.

* Your Right Hand Thief’s Election Notes

In terms of national perception, re-electing Jefferson would be even worse than re-electing Nagin. We’d start hearing familiar queries like: “why does a place that is obviously too supid to self-govern deserve better levees and restored wetlands?”

* Adrastos with Midura Cries, Dolla’ Bill Lies

The City Council unanimously passed a somewhat watered down version of the Inspector General bill proposed by Councilwoman Shelley Midura, Her victory, however, was overshadowed by the fact that Dyan (Mama D) French and some other local gadflies made Ms. Midura cry a river. They called her a racist and dubbed the bill as some sort of conspiracy by THE MAN.

This sad vignette is another great example of begging the question: To assume that all or most New Orleans officials are black, and then to accuse city politicians of targeting those black officials.  Moreover, who cares whether crooks and liars are black or white?  We’ve got to start somewhere in rebuilding this city right and one of the largest impediments to progress here is historical and ongoing corruption.  If it helps, think of it as setting a precedent for when The Man is in full power again.  Sheesh.

A note to Shelley Midura: If the words of whackjob Dyan French “They Bombed The Levees” Cole upset you, a thicker hide ought to be next on your shopping list.

Think New Orleans, on the other hand, recommends the “lightening up” approach.

When a politician asks people to put aside petty differences, there had better be space aliens on the attack. Otherwise, politics is a competition of interests. Asking someone to dismiss their differences for the good of the whole only begs more questions. It’s easier to play politics than to play fair.

Perhaps, to Shelley Midura, The Road To Recovery is the equivalent of a space alien attack.  It’s obvious to me with things like Neighborhood Rebuilding Plan Version 9 From Outer Space floating around.  (And there’s that “begging questions” phrase again.  *sigh*)

VatulBlog has just one word for Ted Haggard: Bwahahahahaha!  Hypocrite!  Ok, that was two words, sort of …
