New Orleanians began early voting today at the local City Hall as well as at satellite stations around the state.
ACORN is doing a superb job of transporting the displaced to these satellite centers and back to their exile dwellings in Texas, Georgia, Arkansas and Mississippi.
nola.com reports that “ten parishes will open polls to serve New Orleans voters: Orleans, St. Tammany, Jefferson, East Baton Rouge, Rapides, Caddo, Calcasieu, Lafayette, Ouachita and Terrebonne.” Amid debates over how many local and displaced New Orleanians will take the opportunity to vote, secretary of state, Al Ater, says the system is ready for 100,000 voters.
The usual voter apathy may decrease this time around, in my opinion. Everyone wants a say about returning home and how. When the immediate going gets tough, does citizen participation get going immediately?
” … This is the most important ballot of my life,” said Gilda Burbank, a former community outreach worker at a New Orleans church. “I want to come home. I mean, I want to come home. I mean, every day, I want to come home.”
The NYT Photo gave me pause–please update and say you’re well!
