Greetings from the cold, grey north. I’m in Madison, WI this weekend to visit old friends and, more importantly, to help D celebrate his birthday. Did I mention it’s cold? The pair of jeans that were sticking to me in New Orleans’s sultry oven yesterday is now an insufficient barrier against the winds of the Isthmus.
Project Gutenberg is on PC World’s 101 Fabulous Freebies list! Finally, recognition on the order of Google, Yahoo! and other younger services for this 30+ year old project founded my dear friend, Michael Hart. This is great news for our effort!
From the announcement email:
“Downloads or services named to [the list] were chosen by PC World editors based on features, design, and performance. Each product must be a fully-functioning version consumers can obtain at no cost.”
“Browse electronic versions of more than 17,000 books at this online library,” the list proclaims. It should actually read, “Download, keep for yourself and share electronic versions of more than 17,000 books at this online library.”
Bravo, PG!
Aaack! And I missed you again! FYI, I’m in Chicago on a semi-permanent basis now and we must convene very, very soon. I see a kindred spirit lurking beneath the cynicism. ;-)
Left the frigid flatlands of Iowa, eh? [Or I-O-WAY as some of us referred to it in our tired undergrad days. I mean what else do Illini with underemployed brains have to do on a cold Champaign-Urbana Saturday night?]
Yes, we must get together. Between the taste in music and Irish pubs and existential angst (oh, and the fact that you are a smart young female of Indian origin), we will have ourselves a good old time. Put on some Echo & The Bunnymen and let the Guinness flow. I think a Chicago trip is in order this summer.
