The sky over Mid-City is grey because of a fire that started this morning. The smell of burning wood permeates the Quarter and Gentilly. This conflagration at the corner of N. Roman and Conti looks a lot worse in reality than the following picture allows for.
Overheard: “Another house without flood insurance goes up in flames.”
Tilo will be happy to know that Peter Bennett and his musical glasses are back. Amanda and I ran into him at his usual spot in front of St. Louis Cathedral last night. As he played When The Saints Go Marching In minus one glass that shattered as he fled the storm, he remarked how happy he was to see us back as well. I’ll put up his 2006 tour schedule once it’s finalized; there was a mention of Cambridge, MA and Madison, WI in this year’s itinerary.
Life giveth and life taketh away. Such is the stark yet simple reality of today’s New Orleans.
Off to catch a bit of the action at the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival in the Quarter.
I’m so jealous. I’ve wanted to go to the Tennessee Williams Fest for years. One of these times I hope to make it there. Maybe you’ll post some tidbits for the literarily starved?
Well, I hung out with a few of the authors and publishers of Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? While trying to work my way into conversation with some other authors, I found that it was useless and trying to fight the hordes of local groupies, especially when everyone was sharing his or her Katrina story.
I do plan on sharing something about my readings of the DYK book.
Schroeder,
Can you leave your comment on Peter and the Telescope Guy again? My comments auto-moderator seems to have deleted it in a fit of stupidity.
Thanks!
Mites – I can’t believe that I missed that before! Would love to see him in Cambridge. Please give me details as soon as you find out. Thanks!
