It is highly unusual for me not to receive any mail for three days in a row. Following a short condemnation of the local postal system, I remind myself that friends who live in Mid City have received at most three pieces of mail in the last two months, and that their garbage hasn’t been picked up for more than two weeks running. It’s easy to live in the Sliver On The River, but just the other side of I-10 teems with wreckage and slow progress.
As city elections draw nearer, learn more about the rebounding neighborhood of Mid City (and Mardi Gras) through a short movie lovingly created by a smart, young New Orleanian and Mid City resident. Kalypso Homan says she made the video (with the help of her father, Michael) for two reasons:
“First, it’s six months after Katrina and very little has happened to rebuild our city. Second, I just wanted to show you what makes New Orleans so special, like Mardi Gras, the music and the Indians.”
The girl loves her animals, all the way from participation in Barkus to mourning the city’s critters that died during and after the storm. And who should make a guest appearance in Kalypso’s film but my favorite local cockatoo, Iko.
Some out-standing-takes:
Kalypso: “We live in Mid City, the heart of New Orleans.”
Kalypso’s little brother: “Blah blah blah blah blah.”
“This Mardi Gras was extremely special because it was six months after New Orleans flooded and the levees broke.”
Kalypso rules!!
