An Ignorant Public Is …

… an easily-controlled and manipulated public. [Say it with me …]

A University of Connecticut study sponored by the Knight Foundation reports from their massive study of 112,003 students, 7,889 teachers and 327 school principals:

36% believe newspapers should get “government approval” before publishing,
13% had no opinion, leaving 51% for a free press,
32% say the press has “too much” freedom,
10% say the press has too little freedom,
37% say the amount of press freedom is just right, and
75% thought flag burning was illegal.

From:
U.S. students say press freedoms go too far
First Amendment goes “too far,” say students in survey
First Amendment rights lost on teens

There are clearly some interesting oddities that arise from this study and its reporting:

1. Youngsters tend to pooh-pooh or fight against notions that they don’t know much about or that haven’t particularly crystallized in their heads. Rather than admit they don’t know something, they will say they are against it. This is a much more conservative attitude than being against the First Amendment itself.

2. Three in four thought flag burning is illegal, NOT that it should be illegal, as is often being wrongly reported. (Truth in reporting, people!)

3. Schools are poor quality in this country and we know as well. Everyone from Gingrich to the communists talks about it, but not one of them wants to DO anything about it.

Horrors! And are these the children of my peers?? of those a decade younger than I??

What, I mean WHAT is the world coming to? Liberals of the 60s and 70s spawn Neocons of the new millennium. The Founding Fathers would turn uncomfortably in their graves to know that our youth are so ignorant and self complacent.

Also, all the emphasis is on readin’, ‘ritin and ‘rithmetic. To hell with geography, social studies and history.

It’s no wonder that kids don’t know what’s going on. Also, the average american gets his/her news over the lunch hour from Rush and at night from Savage. So much for the “liberal press.”

Point 1. It’s not just the young.

Years ago, a study went door to door across America with the Bill of Rights, asking adults if they would sign a petition to add these to the Constitution as amendments . . . .

    A large majority said NO!

Point 2. I only saw that they said it WAS illegal . . .incorrectly.

However, only a year or two ago such a law got LOTS of support.

Point 3. That’s because none of them really want the next generation to be more educated than they are . . .just one of the signs I warned you about so long ago . . .of conservatism. . . .

however. . .BOTH sides are going into home schooling big time!

    go figure, eh?

mmmm…My plan for world domination is coming together…Hitler had German nationalism. I’m going to have both nationalism and ignorance on my side! So I’ll have that going for me, which is nice.

Seriously, though … did see this yesterday. Quite disturbing.

…what I’ve come to expect. Regrettably.
