ABC News: Students Dropping Out of High School Reaches Epidemic Levels
A recent study by the Department of Education found that 31 percent of American students were dropping out or failing to graduate in the nation’s largest 100 public school districts. The implications from dropping out of high school are enormous, including a higher risk of poverty and even an abbreviated life span.
… It is estimated that about 2,500 students drop out of U.S. high schools every day. “It’s like seeing a child in the middle of the lake that can’t swim, and you see them bobbing up and down. It’s like watching them drown,” [graduation coach, Sheila] Hendley, said.
This is a deepening crisis, but, akin to Somalia or Indonesia, one that doesn’t make Campaign Platform status and is shrugged off by both parties in government. Public schools are the third world of this nation, not even developing countries. If the state of education is this bad in Baltimore, Cleveland, Oakland and Atlanta, how much worse do you think it is in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama? Our global competitive edge is as sharp as a foam stick.
So much for no child left behind.
Don’t get me started. Interesting post.
