Day 2 More News From The Scene

For those of you looking for neighborhood updates, my house is on the 1400 block of Magazine and Dave lives on St. Mary by the Half Moon.

Dave & Maitri, your homes are fine.

Steve – It’s dry at Toulouse & Burgundy, but about a foot at Rampart.

Fahy’s was open earlier but now is closed.

The water is not rising & the levee did not break downtown.

Everybody’s looting, but just stores not houses.

The governor has just asked remaining residents to leave immediately. The I-10 twin spans are damaged and cannot be used as a path of return. CNN‘s John Zarella reports that water is rising downtown and on Canal St., but Bourbon St. is largely dry. Either this is a very new development or it’s really not that bad. Again, the frustration lies in receiving second-hand information.

More as news trickles in.

I am SO glad that your friend Machelle is all right, and was able to let you know that your house is okay. Hope this gives you some small peace of mind while you are away from your city.

What a relief for you guys! Glad to hear that Fahy’s is okay too! ;)
Stay calm, do your yoga breathing…..

We are new to the area of 2 months, right down the street on St. Mary at Coliseum. Still no flooding? Thank you for any information. Stay safe and dry!

    Hey girl
I am so so relieved that you are okay and your home is okay!!

Hi- my parents live on State St. between Freret and St. Charles.
They are safe in Mississippi but we are dying to know how the houses have held up.
I don’t know the area– are you close by?
Any idea on what they can expect?

  • Dana August 30, 2005, 5:13 PM

My husband and I are on the corner of Euterpe and Coliseum in the big white house with the stained front window. Just wanted to see if anyone knows how that house held up. We didn’t have time to board up so we really don’t know what to expect. We are more concerned about flooding. Any news would be wonderful. Glad everyone made it safely through the storm.

This is the first good news we’ve heard. We are jus 6 blocks away on camp and have been losing hope. Thank you for the info and good luck to you and yours

Glad to hear your place is OK. I read that the CBD and Garden district are doing relatively OK. Water rising on Canal street sounds a little troubling, considering that reports say it is continuing to rise. Thanks for all your updates!

  • Maitri August 30, 2005, 11:00 PM

Ryan: My friend, Dave, lives very close to St. Mary and Coliseum. As of this afternoon everything was ok, but I am not so sure any more with these rumors of a third levee break. Keep your fingers crossed about our neighborhood. In fact, your intersection is probably 3″ higher than where I live, giving it that altitudinal advantage! :-)

Jesse: Freret & St. Charles is uptown by Tulane, and the last I heard there was waist-deep water right out in front of the flagship building of Tulane Univ. itself. My neighborhood is a couple of miles downriver from the one you mention. Unfortunately or fortunately (I don’t know yet), I am not in New Orleans and the only news I get is from one brave woman who sticks her neck out to find out that her friends’ homes are doing well in the Lower Garden District and a few portions of the French Quarter. Again, Uptown flooded by St. Charles and Napoleon, and there were quite a few oaks downed all along St. Charles. nola.com has pictures of this somewhere in their Katrina galleries.

Dana: Is your house the one on the market by Sotheby’s, the one with the beautiful and large living room? If so, I almost rented it. Machelle, our reporter on the ground as it were, is in that neighborhood and as far as she knows, all is ok in terms of flooding. With her lack of power and cellphone, she has managed to get these tiny messages out. Individual homes may not have suffered any destruction, but I have no news for sure. I will hope to goodness that your home stays safe.

Mike & Gwineth: Hope that the rumored third levee breach doesn’t cause flood damage to our homes. Any news I get is yours. Keep checking back.

Everyone else: Thanks for your thoughts. I want to go back so badly, but I can’t.

Glad that your home is OK.

Thank goodness your home is still standing. I hope you’re managing without too much anxiety while waiting out the storm in Houston. Keep these posts coming – I find them educational, entertaining, and above all, a small source of comfort that you are maintaining your sanity in the midst of such turmoil.

  • Jenny August 31, 2005, 1:13 PM

I’m so glad that your home is okay. I cannot believe Machelle stayed, but I hope she remains safe.
Is there any word on the university area??

I’ll be in touch soon, Maitri.

Machelle is thinking about leaving soon, but when and where to I cannot tell. Tulane has a great letter up there which should give you some information about that part of NO.

Where are you? Stay safe, girl.

  • Mike September 1, 2005, 10:58 AM

We’ve heard of gangs of looters spotted running around in the G.D. Are you ok? Have you left yet?

  • Maitri September 1, 2005, 11:18 AM

I’m posting from Ohio until Tuesday – Houston got stifling with the evacuation juju floating around there. My friends, Machelle and Felicity, are still there in the LGD and will evacuate as soon as they have troops to escort them. There aren’t marauding gangs of looters, just an individual few here and there, but the possibility for it to get worse exists.

I just talked to Mac and Felicity and am going to post my chat with them.

    Thanks!

Hey, could anyone tell me whether State & Freret is flooded? How badly? We
live on the first floor but the house is slightly raised (like 3-4 feet maybe).

  • Sarah Nangle September 5, 2005, 5:52 PM

    Hi,

My house is in the 1900 block of Constantinople (parallel to Napoleon…about
3.5blocks above St. Charles). One report on blogs said that there was 3ft in the
street at Marengo and StCharles…one block over from my street. But the
satellite images show that its dry on st charles there and that there is some water
starting at the 1500 block … one maybe one and a half blocks from StCharles
Does anyone know this area? I live right aroudn the corner from Senator Jeferson.

Any news would be good. We (my friends and family) are going to go back with me
to salvage my stuff as soon as they’ll let us back uptown.

    THanks,

Has anyone heard of the situation at St. Charles and Jackson streets?
I am wondering if that area got flooded.
    Thanks!!

  • Maitri September 6, 2005, 11:28 AM

St. Charles and Jackson is just fine. That area was never flooded.

  • Jennifer September 6, 2005, 7:58 PM

That is good news. I’ve heard there is some considerable damage from winds and fallen trees around there. I’m still in shock about the death and destruction… it is overwhelming and still hard to believe.

    Thanks again for your help.
