Day 1197: More Saturday Morning Goodies

* Can’t stop laughing at Jeffrey’s post on the announcement of a new biosafety laboratory inside the Tulane National Primate Research Center in Covington.  Never mind the obvious implications of placing a hazardous facility in a hurricane-prone zone.  Jeffrey references not one, not two, but three instances of Escape From Covington by dozens of research monkeys, which we are assured “were being used solely for breeding purposes, and had not been subjected to experiments of any kind.” What really slays me is that six monkeys are still at large after the most recent decampment in 2005. Feral monkeys. On the loose in the Greater New Orleans Metro Area for the last three years. What do they call themselves? The Simianese Liberation Army?  Where do they hang out?  The Copper Monkey?  The Funky Butt?

* Listening to Heretics on the latest episode of This American Life.

Carlton Pearson’s church, Higher Dimensions, was once one of the biggest in the city, drawing crowds of 5,000 people every Sunday. But several years ago, scandal engulfed the reverend. He didn’t have an affair. He didn’t embezzle lots of money. His sin was something that to a lot of people is far worse: He stopped believing in Hell.

Wow. Just wow.  I’m not completely sold on Rev. Pearson’s stability (N.B.: as a Hindu, I don’t believe in hell anyway), but this show is very well done.

* Also, the latest xkcd comic:

Hell, I’d wanna leave Covington, too, and I’m not even a monkey.

Liprap: I don’t like animal testing labs at all, no matter where they are.

Karen: Do you mean the xkcd comic? If so, no! I only wish I were smart and creative enough to author these comics.
