Day 1178: Somebody Get Me A Buddha

BBC | ‘Buddha boy’ reappears in Nepal

… Ram Bomjan, 18, appeared on Monday near the town of Nijgadh, about 160km (100 miles) south of the capital, Kathmandu.  His followers claim that he is an incarnation of Lord Buddha, who was born in the Nepalese town of Lumbini more than 2,500 years ago.

Mr Bomjan – sometimes known as “Little Buddha” – made international headlines in 2005 when tens of thousands of people gathered to see him sitting cross-legged under a tree for nearly 10 months, reportedly without food or water.  Since then he has disappeared into the jungle and re-emerged several times.

Given that Buddhism is a dharma, i.e. an innate way of life, and all humans, whether they know it or not, are Buddhist, why do the Buddha and the Lama have to be from Nepal or Tibet?

Hat tip to D, who swears Keanu Buddha Boy is none other than Eddie Van Halen.

Actually, from that pic you posted of the Buddha boy, I’d say he’s got a great deal of Chow-Yun Fat in him. Somebody call John Woo!

“Buddha was from India, and allegedly on his 347th Reincarnation at that”, a Rimpoche once told me, laughing like I had asked a silly question.

I have never read anywhere, nor every heard anyone say that lamas must come from the Himalayas. Indeed there are many lamas, of which the Dali is the 16th Leader of Tibet. I have met lamas. I have met monks and Rimpoches. There is a difference though I am not equipped to describe them.

Of the 3 Ways, Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism is the most frightening and direct as it seeks enlightenment in this lifetime or the next etc, sooner than later so to speak.
But to walk such a path one must hold onto a Live Wire riding the Razor’s Edge… and really know your dharma. When one reaches the level of Lama they usually are directing their own reincarnations. This is my impression rather than a specific piece I can quote. As everyone Reincarnates, some catch on after a while, others caught on a long time ago, some do it on the first trip. Here time is not the revelator, karma is. Lamas have lots more karma.

As a geologists, you might find the time scales in the formation of quartz to be a good metaphor…minutes to millennia.
