“Did you hear? Brett Favre’s retiring.”
Tears immediately stung my eyes. I put my hand to my chest and was ready to check the news when I got this Packers.com article from D.
“But that really has nothing to do with it,” McCarthy [said]. “It’s not the fact that he knows he still can play. He had a great time this year.
“It’s just the fact that he’s played a lot of football, and he’s had to fully commit himself and his family year in and year out. When you do get older, you have more responsibility, and he just wants to make sure he’ll be able to commit himself 100 percent.”
Some of you may understand what the Packer nation experiences at this time. When I asked D how he feels, he said it’s a lot like the day you find out Santa isn’t real. Brett Lorenzo Favre is the favorite son of our large family – the embodiment of love for football, hard work, pride and the Packer ethic. We really love this man and understand why he wants to retire, but it’s hard. If he were starting QB in 2030, that would be quite alright with us. Many find it hard to fathom a team without him.
Thank you, Brett, for all of the great years. For giving us fun and legend. #4 Forever!
I share your sense of loss. But I think it was an understandable decision.
