This gentleman in Southbend, Indiana has a quirky way of opining, but he gets it.
Funny thing is it’s no joke to New Orleans
The national news media don’t focus much on New Orleans now, not a year and nine months after Katrina. There are other more important stories. Will Paris Hilton go to jail? What will Sanjaya do now? Who really was the father of Anna Nicole’s baby? Funny, isn’t it?
In other unfunny news:
Hurricane Season Looms, New Orleans Worries
Louisiana Insurance Commissioner James Donelon said he believed the city’s protection was strong enough to stand up to another Katrina, but beyond that, there were no guarantees. “We have never, ever … in the history of New Orleans been better protected against strong surge from hurricanes than we are today,” he said in an interview. But “a Category 4 or 5 hurricane on the critical path, that I can’t answer.”
A hurricane and hurricane storm surge are two different things. In other words, a Category 4 or 5 hurricane could head to Gulf Shores, Alabama but New Orleans may still suffer from storm surge flooding. Nothing can stop a hurricane, a natural force, but strong levees and walls can protect us from a deluge.
This is why the closure of the Mississippi Rover – Gulf Outlet (MR-GO) is a good idea, one that’s belated in the coming and now requires quick action. What worries me is that the Corps has yet to figure out how to close MR-GO and award a contract. If this ends up anything like our current patchwork of levees and the MWI debacle … let’s just say the Corps does not possess the best track record when it comes to picking its contractors.
