My work team spent yesterday at the Fairgrounds as Jazzfest setup volunteers. I worked on stencilling, decals, maps and a lot of hauling and heavy-duty stapling. So, when you’re looking at the large maps, information posters and yellow and black signs all over Fess, think of me and the fact that I almost sacrificed my right pinky finger in a stapler incident for them.
This year, you will be able to purchase wine and champagne along with the usual Miller, Miller Lite, Crap, Crap Lite and Southern Comfort “daquiris.” To which one of the Jazzfest sign supervisors said, “The wine and champagne are going to cost $9 a pop this time, and you know it’s Sutter Home out of a box. I can’t wait to see the fun when the old ladies start mixing their champagne with 7Up.” Joy. This only means another year when I’m stone-cold sober and everyone around me is fall-down drunk and dehydrated. Oh well.
Alexis and I are excited to see Jerry Lee Lewis and Bonnie Raitt, D and I want to see Calexico and Mark and I will probably pay Lucinda Williams a visit as well. The second weekend’s main music attractions don’t quite appeal to my age or taste demographic, so my attendance at the stages seems unlikely at the moment. There are always a hundred other interesting things going on at Jazzfest like brass bands, second lines, smaller unknown bands, the history and crafts tents, friends and the FOOD, and it truly is a cultural experience rather than a big-name music show.
Speaking of friends, oodles will be here and I can’t wait to meet her in person. There’s also talk of Chai volunteering here for a week after Jazzfest wraps up.
It’s Fess time!
I am relieved to learn that Maitri consumes musical acts that are commensurate with her “age or taste demographic”. This will surely ease the targeting of future ad campaigns.
Also I swear I would go back to the Jazzfest (even at the current unconscionable price of admission) if they would only just let me bring my own cooler in. It’s really just that simple.
One of these years I need to get down there for this. Just saw Lucinda here in Ann Arbor a few nights ago. Probably not her best show, but it was still enjoyable. Watch those pinkies…
Hey, the world would be a much better place if marketing catered to me. I don’t need to waste my life or youth on the Allman Brothers or ZZTop. Steely Dan I like … but they are better enjoyed on the home stereo.
We took our cooler last year and they even filled it up with ice for us. Are coolers on the Verboten list as well now?
Did it contain liquor?
I should have clarified that.. I mean.. I’m not going to bring an empty cooler just so I can ice down their $9.00 wine spritzers all day, right?
Precisely why I drink water and … water during Jazzfest and leave the adult beverages for later.
Yeah see that’s where you and I are different. I can think of virtually no human activity that cannot be greatly improved by a generous helping of adult beverage. Apart from maybe roller derby.. which, of course, is beyond help.
Ahh, so the JazzFest boycott is a ploy, there, Jeffrey. It’s allll about the Pink Thing.
I can’t wait to see Lucinda Williams tomorrow. Maybe we’ll see y ou tomorrow.
Calexico was great if you managed to get over there for it… Was a bit of a madhouse by the stages though.
