As opposed to the Modern Druids. Nippy as it is, D and I were at the poorly-attended parade tonight. The Ancient Druids theme this year: Druids Floats. My favorite floats were Sinco Del Floato and My Car Don’t Float.
I wonder how many are chilly in Gentilly tonight, after the A+ response on the part of Blakely & Co.
Dr. A went tonight. I’m still staving off the skank flu so I’m waiting for the big show tomorrow.
Ditto.
Did you get that theme at all though? If I remember correctly, the “Chilly in Gentilly” float was inexplicably Louis Armstrong themed. And there was a “Bunny Float” featuring the Easter Bunny. Plus.. I saw all of these floats already this year.. on Sunday in Carrollton.. when they were actually relevant to the theme.
Ahh, another Blaine Kern mix and match parade.
Not so inexplicable….Armstrong got his first cornet when he was a “resident” of the Colored Waif’s Home, part of which lived on as Milne Boy’s Home…..in Chilly Gentilly. Armstong once said the Home was “…where me and music got married.”
Seems a long way to go for that particular reference… particularly after the Bunny float. It just seemed very hastily thrown together.
Floats are routinely re-used from year to year. King Arthur’s floats are often in the St. Patrick’s Day parade and are shuttled to Baton Rouge for use in their Jupiter and other parades. Large floats are a hell of a lot of work, and many were flooded out in 2005 and haven’t been remade. Hence, note the floats reference in the Ancient Druids parade.
Incidentally, Chilly In Gentilly was also the name of a pedigree racehorse.
Then why didn’t they place that title on the racehorse float? (there was one) I’ve seen enough Carnival to know that floats get recycled. It happens all the time. That’s not what I’m complaining about (actually I’m not really even complaining) I just thought the theme was unimaginative.
