Dear Future Child Of Mine,

October 16, 2009

This is your father and me in the 2006 Krewe du Vieux parade.  Scary, huh?  Makes you not want to come into the world and stuff.  Dad and I often joke that you’ll probably end up a conservative priest because of us.  Too bad, we’re hoping to have you, regardless of advice from this justice [...]

Barack Obama In New Orleans Today

October 15, 2009

How far we have come from 2005. Have we? The picture at top right was taken earlier this year. The fate of Charity hospital is still unknown. New Orleans is still at risk of flooding because of inadequate levees. How far we have come from 2005. Our first desi president. Keeping the harmony. Our Nobel-prize-winning [...]

Schadenfreude (Of The Much-Deserved Variety)

October 14, 2009

Mapquest vs. Google Maps

October 9, 2009

Have been finding lately that Mapquest is more accurate than Google Maps in small towns. Comparisons show erroneous feature collection like roads drawn where there clearly aren’t any on the satellite image, bizarre routing and mislabeled streets.  Granted, this part of Ohio is full of little towns with only one or no streets on StreetView, [...]

Accomplishments Of Note

October 9, 2009

Ok, even if I don’t know how to do (see previous post), I’ll start with what I done did. Work: Submitted a 30-minute speaking proposal to the Where 2.0 2010 conference.  I’ll leave worrying about the slide deck and what I’m going to wear until after it’s accepted. Movies: After not having watched a feature [...]

Incoherence

October 9, 2009

incoherence – lack of cohesion or clarity or organization It’s not writer’s block, nor is it a lack of material to write on.  With all the travel, new phenomena, innovative discussions at work and interesting people I’ve met, I can only describe my life and mind as having been enriched over the last few months.  [...]

The Sensuous Curmudgeon | Barbara Forrest Exposes Louisiana Creationists "Don’t be misled into thinking that Louisiana is a small, hopelessly backward state, and what happens there is of no importance elsewhere. That state is being used as a testing ground for a nationwide theocratic effort to literally undo the Enlightenment. If the creationists’ schemes to [...]

The Globe and Mail | British Columbia Relief Map Sees New Life As Olympic Security Tool I like this sentiment from a commenter: "The Challenger should be appreciated for its beauty and what it represents – BC's triumphalistic resource exploitation era. Preserve it, display it – but make sure our emergency services are using the [...]

Berlin Block Tetris

October 6, 2009

Back in the US of A!  You don’t know how lucky you are.  Ok, A doesn’t quite rhyme with “are,” but the Beatles song sure comes to mind.  Speaking of the USSR, here’s a cool animation from Sergej Hein. Two years ago, I was living in a block in Berlin on the opposite side of [...]
