Day 1259: Won’t You Let Me Take You On A Sea Cruise?

February 6, 2009

Forget him as a musician. Frankie Ford, king of Krewe du Vieux 2009, is hilarious, truly a laugh a minute, while his queen, Barbara Bennett, is as gorgeous as she is witty.  That so many of us howled and blushed at Frankie’s incessant jokes, and Barbara only encouraged him, proves that we picked our royalty [...]

Day 1257: NOLA Brass Bands On Krewe Du Vieux Parade

February 4, 2009

While putting money together for the Krewe du Vieux brass bands, I wonder what they think of our parade.  We cavort, giggle, stumble and stagger through the streets of the Marigny and French Quarter in strange, convoluted combinations of felt, spandex, cardboard, duct tape, glitter and other accoutrements.  The musicians follow faithfully in their crisp uniforms and tight [...]

Day 1256: Stuff That Reporting Mouth

February 3, 2009

WSJ | Pfizer Plans Layoff Of 800 Researchers The pharmaceutical industry faces pressure from investors to slash its spending because drugs generating an estimated $30 billion in sales will lose patent protection over the next several years, sparking competition from less-expensive generic drugs. The recession may trigger even bigger spending cuts, analysts said, if cash-strapped [...]

Day 1255: Darned Rodents

February 2, 2009

Forget Phil the poser, ok? JIMMY of Sun Prairie, WI saw his own shadow today and predicts six more weeks of winter. So did the cute, little, lost fuzzball of a snow-white ferret* who came into Fahy’s during the Superbowl party last night. Too bad he was taken away by Ferret Rescue NOLA before making more useful [...]

Day 1254: Young Guardians Of The Flame

February 1, 2009

Photo published with kind permission of Ms. Herreast Harrison. On the last day of Prospect.1, I had the delightful honor of catching a demonstration of Mardi Gras Indian culture at the Colton School.  It wasn’t adults up there, but children attending Indian school, specifically the Young Guardians Of The Flame of the Guardians Institute.  The [...]
