Southeastern Louisiana Is Officially Screwed

The containment dome failed, Top Kill is looking like a no-go, the flow by now is higher than 5000 barrels per day and Joe Lieberman says, “Accidents happen.”

There’s a difference, senator, between Accidents Happen and The Accident Is Still Happening 21 Days After And Nothing Can Stop It.

BP is now attempting a smaller Macondome, giving me the impression it’s time someone else took over this operation. The Department of Interior under both Bush and Obama is a hot, zero-oversight mess (even the Government Accountability Office is scared). Meanwhile, southeastern Louisiana is done for.

I love the “junk shot” idea, BTW. “Let’s cram the tube with a bunch of random crap and see if that stops it, because we’re totally out of good ideas.” You’d think, given the risk involved with the gas hydrates, that they could have stopped for a second and put a coil in the top of the dome or something, tied in to the end of the heating system they were using on the riser. Idiots. Ask anybody from the northern states how to keep a drain pipe free of ice in the winter…

If I were someone in the government I’d order them to permanently plug the mofo right the f**k now, if they ever want to do business in the U.S.A. again. I mean, shit happens, and it is the bottom of the ocean, but 21 days of letting an environmental disaster grow?
