Mes De Los Muertos

This is D and me at a Halloween 2009 party. We’d done up our faces to look like Day Of The Dead calacas. With the UV light from the stage hitting our faces and that light enhanced in Photochop, I sat back and noticed that I look like death.  No, not Stage-6 H1N1 but the Grim Reaper, the personification of Death itself.  Isn’t that creepy?  Explains the folks at the party dying to meet me.  DYING TO MEET ME? GET IT? Nevermind.

I’m aware that Dia De Los Muertos, the day of the dead, ended a full week ago.  With the shootings in Fort Hood and Orlando, there has been a lot more death to contemplate than usual.  I declare this month Mes De Los Muertos and dedicate this death-and-afterlife-themed mix to everyone we miss, everyone taken away from us too soon or at all. This is my ofrenda.

Speaking of fine Latin American traditions and history, it was exactly two years ago today that King Juan Carlos I of Spain asked Hugo Chavez of Venezuela that infamous question “¿Por qué no te callas?” Definitely a handy-dandy phrase for dealing with the clueless (the ones who don’t speak Spanish, preferably).
