Dear Future Child Of Mine,

D & Me In The Second Line

This is your father and me in the 2006 Krewe du Vieux parade.  Scary, huh?  Makes you not want to come into the world and stuff.  Dad and I often joke that you’ll probably end up a conservative priest because of us.  Too bad, we’re hoping to have you, regardless of advice from this justice of the peace in Louisiana’s Tangipahoa parish who just denied a marriage license to an interracial couple.

“I’m not a racist. I just don’t believe in mixing the races that way,” [Keith] Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. “I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else.”

“There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage,” Bardwell said. “I think those children suffer and I won’t help put them through it.”

Yet I will.  I will make you suffer through love, critical thinking, culture, honesty, independence, faith, hope, tolerance, costumes, public speaking, parades, spicy food, American football, travel and dealing with life, everyone else be damned.  The world may be a simple place when we stay within our self-inflicted parameters of race and status.  It becomes a real and good place, however, only when we love without boundaries.

Sheesh, the Germans in Germany are more down with racial diversity and interracial unions than the mutts of America.

With love,
Mom
