Day 1200: Diverse Louisiana?

It just dawned on me that, for all of its backasswardsness, Louisiana gave the nation its first Indian-American governor and its first Vietnamese-American congressperson.  I’m sure most of you got this when the election results were announced, but hey, I’m still coming off the NyQuil.

Score one and two for diversity!  The Multi-Cultural Party In My Head dissipates, however, on remembering they’re both conservative Republicans (and endorsed by the Family Research Council – eew eew eew).  But, given the 2004-2008 voting shift map below, you may have to be Red when Running For Office In Louisiana While Not White Or Black.  Or even a Martian with four compound eyes and a dozen tentacles could stand for election and win as long as it pleases the neo-con Republican base and has the likes of Meemaw Blanco and Dollar Bill Jefferson as competition.  What do you think?

Exactly. With opponents like Babbling Blanco and Dolla Bill, I’d take Thibeaux’s pet alligator as a winner. Republican or Democrat at heart, I think most people (especially in Louisiana) are sick of the lying, stealing, and overall corruption of its “representatives” and “civil servants.” And I’m glad. I wish I still lived there to see it… that the winners were as diverse as Indian-American and Vietnamese-American… well, that just makes it all the better. (It’s also kind of nice to see a little diversity in the GOP… not named Alan Keyes or JC Watts.)

It seems that Illinois could use a little diversity with Governors from both parties in or headed for jail.

I don’t think LA is particularly shifting republican, I think it’s shifting anti-corruption, and most of the people in office happened to be democrat at the time so they got the boot. I think the voters will hold the cons to a higher standard too.

When I was in NYC this weekend my Indian cab driver asked me where i was from, and when I said LA he went on at length about how awesome it was about Jindal. I’ve never been proud of my state before when it came to politics ;-)
