Day 775: No Wonder My Lips Feel Heavy

Knowing my inability to live without lipstick, my dear husband just sent me this: Lipsticks contain lead, consumer group says. Baby, I live on Cancer Alley and drink the tap water here – lipstick is the least of my worries.

[Procter & Gamble] said in a statement that the quantity of lead a consumer might be exposed to from its lip product “is hundreds of times less than the amount that she would get from eating, breathing and drinking water.”

She? What about men who wear lipstick? Does anyone care about them?

Seriously, however, The Boston Globe states that hazardous levels have been found in a third of market samples along with a list.

Among the highest lead containing samples were:
¢ L“Oreal Colour Riche True Red 0.65 ppm
¢ L“Oreal Colour Riche Classic Wine 0.58 ppm
¢ Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor Maximum Red 0.56 ppm
¢ Christian DiorAddict Positive Red 0.21 ppm

Two brands and types I use (MAC Matte Viva Glam 1 and Burt’s Bees Lips Shimmer Merlot) made it on the buyer beware list, but contain less than 0.1 ppm of lead (the FDA-recommended limit for candy). So, how are these lipsticks hazardous if, say, Reese’s Pieces have more lead?

As someone who grew up with lead-painted walls, chewed on lead-containing toys and consumed certain liquids long stored in old crystal, I’m not too worried.

What I am concerned about is a growing obsession with safety and that there will no longer be real bamboo spears at Mardi Gras, just soft and fuzzy ones. “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” keeps replaying in my head.

Ooooh, it’s all fun and games, till somebody’s lips fall off.

Nice to know there’s another explanation for the presence of dumb broads…HuhHUHhuh…

Liquids long stored in crystal? Like what? Are you saying that the water stored in the fridge in old Johnny Walker bottles is bad for you?

I too was a lifelong RED lipstick wearer, I lost one boyfriend who hated it..creep, and my Dad always referred to it as a “weapon” when I reapplied, so I guess he is backing up the lead content theory. Bullet, lead weapon..

An unfortunate encounter with 6 months of adriamycin changed my skin tone and Red no longer works for me.

But for you, there would be no Maitri if there were no red.

Liprap, another explanation is the over-use of botox. Speaking of which, my neighbor and yours, Jennifer Coolidge, appears in the Nip/Tuck premiere at the end of this month, with a lip ailment.

Tamasha, I am saying “water” stored in Louis XIV cognac bottles sitting in someone’s cellar for years. Real crystal contains quite a bit of lead that is leached out by its contents over the years.

Karen, I saw you wearing bright red lipstick once. It still looks great on you!

Safety… yeah. How do people, especially kids, learn how to be safe if we’ve removed all chances to be unsafe?

What do you mean my mommy and daddy won’t be there my entire life to be safe? Why do you insist on making me make decisions and fend for myself?

I wish you’d take your capitalist ways and go back to where you came from.

    :-)

(That’s sarcasm. I heart you Maitri! We need more people who think like you do)

Emphatic for Mitch? Lt. Governor is not a career deal; it is a stepping stone. The reason Mitch isn’t running in the big boys-and-girls race is because he “can’t afford” (politically) to lose another election. This is no reason for him to shoe-in for the No. 2 spot. We need leadership in this State and City, and this is no way to cultivate it.
